In the beginning of website design first you have to be very focus about color scheme upon which you will build you whole theme. Color schemes are the silent feature for the appearance of website because no one notice this thing consciously but sub consciously this can help the viewer to identify if this site is appealing to him of her or not.

Idea of color combination

Look, different people have their different opinions and strategy to keep the viewer like some website designer makes website very messy; reason behind this is that it provides viewers eyes that confusion which keep that viewer on site, at that time viewers sub-conscious brain tells that wait and explore all the things here. Perhaps some website designers want to keep it simple, like if someone wants to purchase services from website for example ; if I go to any domain register site then my priority is not to explore that site while to get my domain register, While if I goes to any blogging site then it's job is to keep me for more time and this method also useful for e-commerce business or I would like to say they mix both of strategies.

Now in each color scheme plays major role; like if you want to force your client to spend more time of blog you can choose color scheme which is in contras while if you want to force client to buy service as fast as possible you can use different shades of same color. Here are some of the example. But you should be more careful while selecting contras colors because it can reduce the appeal of your site if you picked it wrong.

Light-Bright and dark color combinations

Light color combination feels more friendly while dark color combination feels more like a trust worthy old brand. That is the reason why most of the social sites use light and bright colors. when we look at bright and light colors like blue, yellow, pink, red, green it feels familiar because from the childhood we are dealing with them; that makes our connection between those colors very friendly.

On the other hand dark colors feels like an old thing; from the childhood in our subconscious mind is has fixed that dark color or shades relates to old thing and old thing which means you can put your trust upon them that is why companies who are selling costly things prefer to use those colors.

But still you have to be more careful while selecting colors unmeaningful bright colors can cause pain to eyes and stress; this is also same for dark colors they can also make you dull, nervous and creepy. So whatever strategy you follow must be choose color wisely.
