But you have a brand new idea so you have to develop all the things from scratch and that makes your job very difficult; time and resource consuming.

This will be the first part in your journey; first you have to find similar existing product which you can study and analyze. This will give you a realistic way to start because you know some realistic data.

Now what features to look for; that can be depend upon your idea and product but here are some. Material, appearance, mechanism, usability etc.

Here you have to decide what feature of existing product you want to keep and what not. In most of the time you keep things which are out of your scope or business idea and remove things which can influence your basic concept of idea.

Conceptualization is like script of your movie; without script you can not even think of made it. You can build some kind of mimicking model of your product or presentation etc. It's all depends upon you and also on your idea.

define geometry, material, specifications and tolerance, industrial design control

Here comes the real part and most difficult part of product design and development; in this part you have to define all the things like geometry of your product; which material you are going to use; specifications which you want to give; tolerance from outside environment like water proof, heat conditions, over loading, durability etc.; then you have to refer industrial norms and guidelines by agencies to comply with them.
